Do Not Seek and You Will Find

구하지 말라. 그러면 찾을 것이다.

‘Seek and you shall find’ has become such a commonplace that spiritual aspirants have begun to wonder what it means. To them I say, Do not seek and you will find.

‘구하라 그러면 찾을 것이요.’ 이 구절은 하도 보편화되어서, 영적 갈망자들은 그 뜻이 무엇인지 궁금해한다. 그들에게 내가 말하노니 ‘구하지 말라. 그러면 찾을 것이다.’

Do not seek material pleasure and you will find the spiritual treasure. This means, seek only God by not seeking material pleasures, and you will find God.

‘물질적 즐거움을 구하지 말라. 그러면 영적인 보물을 찾을 것이다.’ 이 말의 뜻은 ‘물질적인 즐거움을 구하지 않고 오직 신만을 구한다면, 신을 찾게될 것이다.’라는 뜻이다.

You can only seek God through self-denial. The spiritual treasure cannot be obtained by merely stretching out your hand for it. only in the completenessof self-denial can the spiritual treasure become self-evident.

신은 오직 극기(self-denial)를 통해서만 찾을 수 있다. 영적 보물은 그저 손만 뻗는다고 해서 얻을 수 있는 게 아니다. 오직 극기의 완성을 통해서만 영적 보물은 자명해진다.

There are three ways of obtaining the spiritual treasure:

이 영적 보물을 얻는 데는 세 가지 길이 있다.

To earn it yourself by self-denial;

극기를 통해 자기 스스로 얻는 방법.

To receive it as a spontaneous gift from God given to His lover whose self has become effaced in the intensity of his longing for his Beloved;

비러벳(Beloved)을 향한 갈망의 강렬함에 의해 자아가 소멸된 러버에게 주어지는 신의 즉흥적인 선물로서 받는 방법.

To inherit it directly from the Perfect Master who bequeaths it to those who remain completely resigned to His will.

늘 그분의 뜻을 전적으로 받아들이는 사람들에게 완벽한 스승(Perfect Master)이 직접 물려주는 영적 보물을 받는 방법.

Therefore if you wish to find the treasure, stop seeking material pleasure. Seek thekingdom of Heaven by not seeking the kingdom of earth, and you will find it.

그러므로 만일 그대가 보물을 찾으려 한다면, 물질적 즐거움의 추구를 멈추어라. 지상의 왕국(kingdom of earth)을 구하지 않음으로써 천상의 왕국(kingdom of Heaven)을 구하라; 그리하면 분명 얻게 되리라.
