세 종류의 구도자

디자이너 님, 모든 항목이 세 종류로 구분되는데요. 아래쪽에 문장이 길어지는 부분들은 각 문장 앞에 *이나 점표시를 하여, ‘구분되는 세 가지’라는 것을 명료하게 해주면 좋을 것 같습니다.

 

DISCIPLES:

Those who do not give but ask.

Those who give but also ask.

Those who give and never ask.

The intellectual seeker.

YOGIS:

Those who master Yogic exercises merely for occult powers.

Those who long for the Goal and also for occult powers.

Those who long for the Goal and give no thought to occult powers.

‘깨달음’의 목표를 갈망하면서도, 오컬트(마법)적인 신통력도 원하는 요기

오직 ‘깨달음’의 목표만을 원하며, 오컬트(마법)적인 신통력에는 관심 없는 요기

LOVERS:

세 종류의 러버들(lovers)

The mast* who loves and knows only God. He loses all consciousness of his body and surroundings, and is dead to himself and the world. For him only God exists.

오로지 신만을 알고 신만을 사랑하는 머스트(mast). 그는 자기 몸과 주변 상황에 대해서는 완전히 의식을 잃은 사람이다. 이 세상이나 자기 자신에 대해선 이미 죽은 사람이다. 그에게는 오직 신만이 존재한다.

The one who lives in the world, carries out his worldly duties and responsibilities a hundred percent, but is all the time conscious that everything is passing and only God exists. He loves God without others being aware of it.

세상 속에 살며 자신에게 주어진 세속의 의무와 책임들을 100% 완수하면서도, ‘오직 신만이 존재한다는 사실과 세상 모든 것이 일시적이라는 사실’을 늘 자각하는 사람. 그는 남들이 모르게 신을 사랑한다.

The one who completely surrenders to the God-Man (the Christ or Avatar). He no longer lives for himself, but for the God-Man. This is the highest and rarest type of lover.

갓맨(God-Man, 신-인간)에게 완전히 항복한 사람. 즉 그리스도나 아바타(Avatar)에게 완전히 항복한 사람. 그는 더 이상 자신을 위해서 살지 않고, 갓맨을 위해서만 산다. 이런 사람이야말로 가장 드물고 고귀한 러버(lover)의 유형이다.

RESIGNERS:

세 종류의 단념한 자들(resigners)

Those who do what the Master asks at all cost, but expect reward.

마스터(스승)가 시키는 것은 무슨 수를 써서라도 하되, 무언가 보상을 바라는 사람.

Those who do what the Master asks, sacrificing everything and not expecting reward; but they do it because their surrender to the Master demands it of them.

마스터(스승)가 시키는 것은 모든 걸 희생해서라도 하며, 그 어떤 보상도 바라지 않는 사람. 그러나 그들은 마스터에 대한 항복(surrender)이 이런 행동을 요구하기에, 이렇게 한다.

Those who have no thought of their surrender and are so completely resigned to the Master’s Will that the question of how, why or when, never enters their minds. These are the ‘fortunate slaves’ that Hafiz advises us to become:

자신의 항복에 대해서는 전혀 생각하지 않고, 마스터의 뜻(Master’s Will)에 완전히 내맡겼기에 ‘어떻게’  ‘왜’  ‘언제’와 같은 질문이 더 이상 생기지 않는 사람. 이들이 바로 하피즈가 우리에게 권장한 ‘복받은 노예’다.

Mazan ze choono-chera dam ke banda-e-muqbil;

Ze jan qabul kunad har sukhan ke Sultan guft.

Befitting a fortunate slave, carry out every command of the Master without any question of why or what.

‘왜’ ‘무엇’ 등 어떠한 질문도 없이 마스터의 모든 명령을 이행하는 제자야말로 마땅히 복받은 노예다.

 

*머스트(mast): 신에 대한 사랑에 취한 사람.
