세 가지의 값싼 영적 체험들

On a certain stage of the spiritual journey there is an experience in which all things to the aspirant’s physical eyes gradually fade away leaving a void, facing which he feels fright or panic. But the next moment a lotus appears within the void. This experience is not enduring, the lotus disappears and all things begin to reappear.

영적인 여행의 일정한 단계에 이르게 되면, 갈망자의 육체적 눈에서 세상이 점차적으로 사라져 빈 허공만이 남게 된다. 이때 갈망자는 두려움과 공포를 느끼게 된다. 그러나 바로 다음 순간, 그 허공 속에서 연꽃이 솟아난다. 이 체험은 그리 오래 가지 않는다. 연꽃은 사라지고 현상 세계의 사물이 다시 보이기 시작한다.

There is another sort of experience which completely dazes the aspirant, so that all else is obliterated from his consciousness. It is a state of conscious coma. Even physically there is an abrupt halt, and whatever the posture of the body at the moment this experience begins, it is maintained until the experience wears off. For instance, if at the moment the hand is in a raised position, it will remain raised until the end of the coma which may be of a short duration or may last for years at a stretch.

또 다른 종류의 영적 체험은 갈망자를 완전히 멍하게 하여, 그 체험 외에는 의식에 아무 것도 남지 않게 한다. 이것은 의식이 깨어 있는 혼수상태(coma)다. 육체에도 갑작스런 ‘멈춤’이 일어나, 체험이 시작되는 순간의 몸이 어떤 자세였든간에 체험이 끝날 때까지 지속된다. 예를 들어, 그 순간 팔을 들고 있었다면 혼수 상태가 끝날 때까지 그는 팔을 들고 있게 된다. 이 시간은 짧은 순간일 수도 있고, 몇 년에 이를 수도 있다.

There is yet another sort of experience. It is the experience of the fourth plane. Here Infinite Power is in one’s hand and this entails great risk to the aspirant.

이와 또 다른 종류의 영적 체험도 있다. 이것은 4경지(fourth plane)의 체험이다. 이 경지에 도달한 갈망자의 손에는 엄청난 영적 위험이 수반되는 무한한 파워(Infinite Power)가 주어진다. 

 

After crossing the fourth plane, one kisses the threshold of God’s Abode. But, as Hafiz has said, Just before the ‘kiss’ there is the vault of heaven (asman) where you feel all powerful, but the least misuse of that power will drag you to the dust.

4경지를 넘어서게 되면, 신의 거처(God’s Abode)의 문지방에 키스를 한 것이다. 그러나 (하피즈가 말했듯이) 이 ‘키스’ 직전에, 자신이 전지전능하다고 느끼는 천국의 금고(asman)를 지나야만 한다. 이때 티끌만큼이라도 그 파워를 남용한다면, 그대는 먼지로 끌어내려질 것이다.

So, on this spiritual path, there are three sorts of cheap experience. The experience of the first causes fright, of the second makes one dazed; and with the third is the risk of an immense fall.

이렇듯 영적 경로에는, 세 가지의 값싼 영적 체험들이 있다. 첫 번째는 겁을 주고, 두 번째는 멍하게 하며, 세 번째에는 엄청난 영적 추락을 초래할 위험이 따른다. 

The Perfect Master (Qutub) does not make one consciously pass through the planes.To grant intermediate experiences of the planes, is child’s play to the Perfect Master. But the Perfect Master is not interested in giving a ‘drop’ – when He gives, He gives the ‘Ocean’. For Him to do so, He expects from His disciples complete obedience in wholehearted love. When this is fulfilled, in one moment He raises the disciple to the highest level, which is the Experience of Infinite Consciousness of the state of I am God!

완벽한 스승(Perfect Master) 또는 쿠툽(Qutub)은, 영적 경지들을 의식적으로 거쳐가도록 하지 않는다. 중간 단계의 영적 체험을 누군가에게 주는 것은, 완벽한 스승에게는 아이들 장난에 불과하다. 그러나 완벽한 스승은 고작 한 방울의 물을 주는 데에는 관심이 없다. 그분이 준다면, 그는 온 바다(Ocean)를 주신다. 그러나 보통 그분이 그러기 위해서는, 제자의 온가슴을 바친 사랑과 완전한 복종이 전제되어야 한다. 이 조건이 충족되면, 그분은 한순간에 그 제자를 최상의 단계로 상승시킨다. 즉, 제자에게 ‘나는 신이다의 상태’(I am God State)인 무한한 의식(Infinite Consciousness)의 체험을 주신다!
