A Journey Without Journeying

오고 감 없는 여행

 

The succession of experiences that one goes through in the process of involution is called the Spiritual Path, and the going through them is likened to a journey. on one stage you hear melodious sounds and music that enchant and overwhelm you. on another stage you see wonderful visions in which most often you get lost. Such experiences are part and parcel of the Great Dream in Illusion, though together they may be called a real or super Dream compared with day to day experiences of the gross sphere.

‘영적 역진화과정’(involution) 안에서 한 영혼이 통과하며 거치는 일련의 체험들을 영적 경로(Spiritual Path)라 한다. 이 체험들을 거치는 과정은 마치 여행과도 같다. 어느 단계에 도달했을 때, 그대는 아름다운 소리와 음악의 황홀함에 넋을 잃는다. 또다른 단계에 도달했을 때, 그대는 경이로운 비전(visions)을 보다가 대부분의 경우 그 속에서 길을 잃게 된다. 이러한 체험들은 환상 속의 ‘큰 꿈’의 일부에 불과하다; 그러나 이 체험들을 ‘물질적 영역'(gross sphere)에 속한 일반인의 일상의 체험과 비교하면, 참된 꿈이나 고차원의 꿈이라 부르는 것이 적절할 것이다. 

The experiences are so innumerable and varied, that the journey appears to be interminable and the Destination is ever out of sight. But the wonder of it is, when at last you reach your Destination you find that you had never travelled at all! It was a journey from here to Here. As one Sufi expressed it, When I plucked the date (Fruit of Realization) I found the fruit was within me.

이러한 체험들은 너무도 다양하고 무수하기에, 영적 여행은 끝없이 이어지는 듯 하고 목적지는 언제나 저 먼 너머에 있는 듯 보인다. 그러나 무엇보다도 놀랄 일이 있다. 그대가 머나먼 여행 끝에 목적지(Destination)에 도착해보면, 어떤 여행도 한 적이 없었다는 사실을 알게 된다는 것이다! 이 자리(here)에서 이 자리(Here)로, 그대는 간 곳 없는 여행을 한 것이다. 어떤 수피는 이것을 이렇게 표현하였다.

나무에서 대추를 따던 날,

그 대추가 원래 내 안에 있었음을 알았네.

* 대추 : ‘깨달음의 과일’을 상징

The journey seems infinitely long while you are passing through the dream-experiences of reincarnation and the six planes of involution, until finally you merge into yourself to emerge as Self. But the journey is after all no journey: it is simply the momentum of your urge to awaken from the Dream and get established in the reality of the God-state of Infinite Consciousness. To awaken means to consciously experience the sound-sleep State of God. When you awake you find that the Great Dream containing all the varied illusory aspects of dreaming, has vanished for ever. Heaven and hell as well as all the planes vanish within your Self, to remain as nothing. In this Awakened State, there is no scope for anything besides you – the Self, the Existence eternal and infinite.

수없는 환생의 꿈-체험을 거쳐, 그 후 여섯 경지로 이뤄진 ‘역진화 과정’을 거치는 동안, 그리고 마침내 그대가 자신 안으로 녹아들어 참나(Self)로 드러나기까지, 이 여행길은 끝도 없이 길게 느껴진다. 그러나 이 여행은 결코 여행이 아니다: 꿈에서 깨어나려는 그대의 충동이 몰아온 기세다; 즉, 무한한 의식이며 신의 상태(God-state)인 실재(Reality)에 확립되려는 그대의 충동에서 비롯된 기세다.  깨어난다는 것은, 신의 깊은 잠 상태(sound-sleep State of God)를 의식적(consciously)으로 체험하는 것이다. 언젠가 꿈에서 깨어났을 때 그대는, 꿈의 온갖 환상적 측면을 포함하고 있는 ‘큰 꿈’ 자체가 영원히 사라졌다는 것을 알게 된다. 천국과 지옥을 포함한 모든 영적 경지들도 그대의 참나 속으로 사라져 무(無)가 된다. 이 깨어난 상태(Awakened State)는, 그대 자신(you) 외에는 그 무엇도 함께할 수 없는 자리다 – 무한하고 영원한 존재이며 참나인 그대 자신(you) 이외에는.

This is the only Experience worth experiencing and aspiring after. To gain this Experience you have to become as dust at the feet of the Perfect Master – which amounts to becoming as nothing. And, when you become absolutely nothing, you become Everything.

오직 이 체험만이 추구하고 체험할 가치가 있는 유일한 것이다. 이러한 체험을 얻기 위해선 완벽한 스승의 발 아래 먼지처럼 되어야 한다. 즉 무(無)가 되어야 한다. 언젠가 그대가 완전한 무(nothing)가 될 때, 완전한 유(Everything)가 될 것이다.
