Narayan Meets His Guru
Narayan was drawn to climb a nearby mountain and live in a cave and in this cave he did not eat or drink, but played with fire! In his play with the elements joy and pain combined. The pain from the flames burning his flesh was so intense that it maintained his link with the physical body. Simultaneously, the spiritual joy was overwhelming—liberating him from his body. His pain expressed itself; strangely though there was no bliss for him without this pain! The suffering overcame him and he cried out in the cave, “Alas, my Beloved, why won’t You meet me? ... Why have You turned away from me?... Why don’t You turn and show me Your glorious face?”
The cave had been transformed into a furnace. Crying with pain, Narayan was writhing in that cave of flames – inwardly merging with a sea of fire. Finally unconsciousness came to Narayan and after awakening he saw all the walls of the cave charred, while his body remain unscathed.
Quite emaciated, Narayan abandoned the cave and wandered along the mountain cliffs. After some days, he was dazed sitting alongside a monastery situated in the mountain, absorbed in his inner state, when a voice aroused him out of his trance. The voice was clearly calling him and he entered the chambers of the monastery where at the end of a passageway he saw an old man. When Narayan went up to him and bowed, suddenly the old man’s gaze turned his sea of restlessness into a sea of bliss! Narayan fell at his feet, recognizing the old man as the master he had been dreaming of. The disquiet he had experienced for nearly ten years melted away into peace at sight of his guru.
The old man embraced the youth, then told Narayan, “I am hungry. Go beg and bring me some food.” When Narayan returned with the food, he found the monastery doors locked! Shocked, he started shouting for his master. Hearing his cries, the caretaker of the monastery appeared and told him, “No one has been here for a long while. That old man went home a long time ago after he locked up.”
When the door was unlatched at Narayan’s insistence, there was no one inside. Narayan was bewildered and he sat outside the monastery under a neem tree, silently calling upon his guru to come and partake of the food. The youth was overcome with tears and the terrible restlessness that had left him reappeared with a fresh tenacity.
“Oh master, where are you? Why have you hidden? Allow me to see your face again!... instructed. I will not eat until you come and take it. Come, master, come soon or I will die without you!”
Dattatrey Appears
For three days, Narayan wept bitterly. The deep pang of separation was killing him, when suddenly he saw his guru standing before him. The old man sat down alongside the youth and accepted the food. The guru then gave the remaining food to Narayan, telling him, “Finish it, this is my prasad to you.”
As soon as Narayan swallowed the first morsel of food, the appearance of the old man completely changed. He found that the old man was none other than Dattatrey! The old man’s body has transformed into a young man’s with six arms and his old face transformed into three heads!
With this vision, Narayan himself transformed into NARAYAN – the Universal One! The youth became God-Realized—crossing the limits of duality. But young Narayan with the attainment of divine consciousness—“Aham Brahmasmi”—lost his own individual consciousnesss and had no link with the world or his body. Gradually, however, after some period of time, Dauatrey’s grace enabled the youth to regain consciousness of his body and the atmosphere around him. During this phase of coming down from the God state Narayan’s health had completely broken down, but upon regaining his gross consciousness he also regained his health with his perfected consciousness, and his eighteen-year-old body revived, strong and vibrant.
자신의 스승을 만나는 나라얀
나라얀은 어느 날 인근 산을 오르고 싶은 강한 끌림을 느꼈고, 결국 산중의 한 동굴에서 살기 시작했다. 그곳에서 그는 음식도 물도 끊고, 불과 더불어 노닐기 시작했습니다! 기쁨과 고통이 결합된 요소들과 더불어 자신의 놀이에서 그의 살을 태우는 불길로 인한 고통은 너무 강렬해서 그의 육체와의 연결을 유지시켜 주었고, 동시에, 영적 기쁨은 압도적이었으며 그를 몸으로부터 해방시켰습니다. 그의 고통은 스스로를 표현했습니다. 이상하게도 이 고통 없이는 그에게 환희가 없었습니다! 고통이 그를 압도하자 그는 동굴에서 울부짖었습니다, “아아, 나의 비러벳이여, 왜 저를 만나주지 않으십니까?... 왜 저를 외면하십니까?... 왜 돌아서서 당신의 영광스러운 얼굴을 보여주지 않으십니까?”
동굴은 용광로로 변해 있었습니다. 고통으로 울부짖으며, 나라얀은 그 불길의 동굴 속에서 몸부림치고 있었습니다. 내면적으로는 불의 바다와 합쳐지고 있었습니다. 마침내 나라얀은 의식을 잃었고 깨어난 후 그는 동굴의 모든 벽이 탄 것을 보았지만, 그의 몸은 상처 없이 남아있었습니다.
몸은 뼈만 남을 정도로 여위었지만, 나라얀은 동굴을 떠나 산 절벽을 따라 방황했습니다. 며칠 후, 그는 산 중턱에 위치한 한 수도원 옆에 앉아 내면의 상태에 잠겨 멍해 있을 때, 어떤 목소리가 그를 황홀경에서 깨웠습니다. 그 목소리는 분명히 그를 부르고 있었고, 그는 수도원의 내실로 들어갔는데, 통로 끝에서 한 노인을 보았습니다. 나라얀이 그에게 다가가 절을 하자, 갑자기 노인의 시선이 그의 불안감의 바다를 환희의 바다로 바꾸어 놓았습니다! 나라얀은 그 노인이 자신이 꿈꿔왔던 스승임을 알아보고 그의 발 아래 엎드렸습니다. 거의 10년 동안 경험했던 불안감은 그의 구루를 보는 순간 평화 속으로 녹아 들었습니다.
노인은 젊은이를 포옹한 후, 나라얀에게 말했습니다. “나는 배가 고프다. 가서 구걸하여 음식을 가져오너라.” 나라얀이 음식을 가지고 돌아왔을 때, 그는 수도원 문이 잠겨 있는 것을 발견했습니다! 충격을 받은 나라얀은 자신의 스승을 부르며 소리치기 시작했습니다. 그의 외침을 듣고, 수도원의 관리인이 나타나 그에게 말했습니다. “여기엔 오랫동안 아무도 없었습니다. 오래 전에 그 노인은 문을 잠근 후 집으로 돌아갔습니다.”
나라얀의 간청에 문이 열렸을 때, 안에는 아무도 없었습니다. 나라얀은 당황했고 수도원 밖 님 나무 아래 앉아, 자신의 구루가 와서 음식을 먹어주기를 조용히 기도했습니다. 눈물이 그를 휩쓸었고, 그를 떠났던 끔찍한 불안감이 새로운 집요함으로 다시 나타났습니다.
“오 스승님, 어디 계십니까? 왜 숨으셨습니까? 당신의 얼굴을 다시 볼 수 있게 해 주십시오!... 지시대로. 당신이 와서 이것을 가져가기 전까지 저는 먹지 않을 것입니다. 오십시오, 스승님, 빨리 오십시오. 그렇지 않으면 당신 없이 저는 죽을 것입니다!”
다타트레야의 등장
사흘 동안, 나라얀은 비통하게 울었습니다. 깊은 이별의 고통이 그를 죽여가고 있을 때, 갑자기 그는 자신의 구루가 그 앞에 서 있는 것을 보았습니다. 노인은 젊은이 옆에 앉아 음식을 받아들였습니다. 그런 다음 구루는 남은 음식을 나라얀에게 주며 말했습니다. “다 먹거라, 이것은 너에게 주는 나의 프라사드[은총 음식]니라.”
나라얀이 첫 번째 음식 조각을 삼키자마자, 노인의 모습이 완전히 바뀌었습니다. 그는 노인이 다름 아닌 다타트레야임을 알았습니다! 노인의 몸은 여섯 개의 팔을 가진 젊은이의 몸으로 변했고, 노인의 늙은 얼굴은 세 개의 머리로 변했습니다!
이 환시와 함께, 나라얀 자신은 우주적 존재인 나라얀으로 변모했습니다! 젊은이는 신을 깨달은 상태가 되어 이원성의 한계를 넘어섰습니다. 그러나 “아함 브라흐마스미[나는 브라흐만이다]”인 신성한 의식을 성취한 젊은 나라얀은 자신의 개체적 의식을 잃고 세상이나 자신의 몸과 연결되지 않았습니다. 그러나 점차적으로, 시간이 지난 후, 다타트레야의 은혜로 젊은이는 자신의 몸과 주변 환경에 대한 의식을 되찾을 수 있었습니다. 신의 상태에서 내려오는 이 단계에서 나라얀의 건강은 완전히 망가졌지만, 그의 물질적 의식을 되찾자 그는 완벽해진 의식과 함께 건강도 회복했고, 그의 18세의 몸은 강하고 활기차게 되살아났습니다.
