“Light and joy and peace abide in me.”

“빛과 기쁨과 평화는 내 안에 머무르고 있다.”

 

 

You think you are the home of evil, darkness and sin. You think if anyone could see the truth about you he would be repelled, recoiling from you as if from a poisonous snake. You think if what is true about you were revealed to you, you would be struck with horror so intense that you would rush to death by your own hand, living on after seeing this being impossible.

 

너는, 자신이 악과 어둠과 죄의 본거지라 생각한다. 너는, 만약 어느 누구라도 너에 관한 진실을 보게 된다면 그는 마치 독뱀이라도 본 것처럼 크게 놀라 소스라치면서 너로부터 물러날 것이라고 생각한다. 너는, 만약 너에 관해 사실인 것이 너에게 드러나게 된다면, 너무나도 강렬한 공포로 충격을 받아 자신의 손으로 죽음을 향해 달려가게 될 것이라 생각한다. 이런 모습을 보고난 후에도 살아가기란 도저히 불가능하다고 생각하면서 말이다.

 

 

These are beliefs so firmly fixed that it is difficult to help you see that they are based on nothing. That you have made mistakes is obvious. That you have sought salvation in strange ways; have been deceived, deceiving and afraid of foolish fantasies and savage dreams; and have bowed down to idols made of dust; all this is true by what you now believe.

 

이러한 믿음들은 너무나도 뿌리 깊게 박혀 있어서, 그것들이 실제로는 그 무엇에도 기초하고 있지 않다는 것을 네가 이해하도록 돕기란 참으로 어렵다. 네가 실수를 저질렀다는 것은 너무나도 분명한 듯하다. 또한 네가 기괴한 방법으로 구원을 찾았다는 것도 분명한 듯 보인다. 네가 속아 왔다는 것도, 누군가를 속여 왔으며 어리석은 환상들과 잔혹한 꿈들을 두려워했다는 것도, 그리고 티끌로 만든 우상들을 섬겨왔다는 것 역시 그러하다. 이 모든 것은 지금 네가 믿고 있는 것에 의해서 사실이다.

 

 

Today we question this, not from the point of view of what you think, but from a very different reference point, from which such idle thoughts are meaningless. These thoughts are not according to God’s Will. These weird beliefs He does not share with you. This is enough to prove that they are wrong, but you do not perceive that this is so.

 

오늘 우리는 이것에 의문을 제기할 것인데, 네가 지금 생각하고 있는 관점에서가 아니라 그러한 생각들이 무의미하다고 보는 상당히 다른 기준점으로부터 의문을 제기할 것이다. 이러한 생각들은하나님의 뜻에 부합하지 않는다. 그분은 이러한 괴상한 믿음들을 너와 공유하고 계시지 않다. 이것만으로도 이러한 믿음들이 틀렸다는 것을 증명하기에는 충분하나, 너는 이것이 과연 그러하다는 것을 아직 지각하고 있지 못하다.

 

 

Why would you not be overjoyed to be assured that all the evil that you think you did was never done; that all your “sins” are nothing; that you are as pure and holy as you were created, and that light and joy and peace abide in you? Your image of yourself cannot withstand the Will of God. You think that this is death, but it is life. You think you are destroyed, but you are saved.

 

왜 너는 자신이 저질렀던 생각하는 모든 악이 실제로는 결코 행해진 적이 없었다는 것을 확인받고도 크게 기뻐하려 하지 않는가? 왜 너는, 자신의 모든 “죄들”이 아무 것도 아니라는 것에 대해, 너는 자신이 창조되었을 때처럼 순수하고 거룩하다는 것에 대해, 그리고 빛과 기쁨과 평화는 네 안에 머무르고 있다는 것에 대해 확인받고도 크게 기뻐하지 않는가? 너 자신에 대한 너의 이미지는 하나님의 뜻에 버텨낼 수 없다. 너는 이것이 죽음이라 생각하겠지만, 실은 이것이 생명이다. 너는 자신이 파괴된다고 생각하겠지만, 실은 너는 구원되는 것이다.

 

 

The self you made is not the Son of God. Therefore, this self does not exist at all. And anything it seems to do and think means nothing. It is neither bad nor good. It is unreal, and nothing more than that. It does not battle with the Son of God. It does not hurt him, nor attack his peace. It has not changed creation, nor reduced eternal sinlessness to sin and love to hate. What power can this self you made possess, when it would contradict the Will of God?

 

네가 만들어낸 자아는 하나님의 아들이 아니다. 그러므로 이러한 자아는 결코 존재하고 있는 것이 아니다. 그리고 자아가 하려는 듯 보이고 생각하려는 듯 보이는 것은 죄다 무의미하다. 자아란 악한 것도 선한 것도 아니다. 그것은 그저 실재하지 않는 것일 따름이며, 그 이상도 아니다. 그것은 하나님의 아들과 맞서 싸우지 못한다. 그것은 그[=하나님의 아들]를 다치게 하지도 그의 평화를 공격하지도 않는다. 그것은 하나님에 의해 창조된 것을 변화시키지도 못했으며 또한 영원한 죄없음을 죄로, 사랑을 미움으로 격하시키지도 못했다. 네가 만들어낸 이 자아는 하나님의 의지와 상충되는데 과연 무슨 힘을 가질 수 있겠는가?

 

 

Your sinlessness is guaranteed by God. Over and over this must be repeated, until it is accepted. It is true. Your sinlessness is guaranteed by God. Nothing can touch it, nor can change what God created as eternal. The self you made, evil and full of sin, is meaningless. Your sinlessness is guaranteed by God, and light and joy and peace abide in you.

 

너의 죄없음은 하나님에 의해 보장을 받고 있다. 이것은 너에 의해 받아들여질 때까지 몇 번이고 거듭해서 반복되어야만 한다. 이것은 사실이다. 너의 죄없음은 하나님에 의해 보장을 받고 있다. 그 무엇도 이 사실에 손끝하나 건드릴 수도, 또 하나님께서 영원한 것으로 창조하신 것을 변화시킬 수도 없다. 네가 만들어낸 악하고 죄로 가득한 자아란 무의미하다. 너의 죄없음은 하나님에 의해 보장을 받고 있으며, 빛과 기쁨과 평화는 네 안에 머무르고 있다.

 

 

Salvation requires the acceptance of but one thought; you are as God created you, not what you made of yourself. Whatever evil you may think you did, you are as God created you. Whatever mistakes you made, the truth about you is unchanged. Creation is eternal and unalterable. Your sinlessness is guaranteed by God. You are and will forever be exactly as you were created. Light and joy and peace abide in you because God put them there.

 

구원은 단 하나의 생각을 받아들이는 것만을 요구할 따름이다. 너는 하나님께서 너를 창조하셨던 그대로이다. 너는 너 자신에 대해 네가 만들어낸 모습이 아니다. 자신이 어떤 악을 저질렀다고 생각할지라도, 너는 하나님께서 창조하셨던 그대로이다. 네가 어떤 실수를 저질렀다 하더라도, 너에 관한 진실은 변하지 않는다. 창조란 영원하며 불변하는 것이다. 너의 죄없음은 하나님에 의해 보장을 받고 있다. 너는 지금도 그리고 앞으로도 영원히 자신이 창조된 그대로일 것이다. 빛과 기쁨과 평화는 네 안에 머무르고 있다. 왜냐하면 하나님께서 그것들을 네 안에 가져다 놓으셨기 때문이다.

 

 

In our longer exercise periods today, which would be most profitable if done for the first five minutes of every waking hour, we will begin by stating the truth about our creation:

오늘 우리가 하게 될 긴 연습은

네가 깨어 있는 동안 매 정시마다 5분 동안 행하는 것이 가장 유익할 것인데, 우리의 창조에 관한 다음의 진실을 말하는 것으로 길게 하는 연습을 시작할 것이다. [역주 : 예컨대 새벽 6시 반에 일어나 밤11시 반에 잠든다 치면, 아침7시부터 밤11시까지 매 정각마다 한 번씩 5분간 연습을 하는 것이 가장 바람직하다는 뜻인 듯하다.]

 

 

“Light and joy and peace abide in me.

My sinlessness is guaranteed by God.”

“빛과 기쁨과 평화는 내 안에 머무르고 있다.

내 죄없음은 하나님에 의해 보증을 받는다.”

 

 

Then put away your foolish self-images, and spend the rest of the practice period in trying to experience what God has given you, in place of what you have decreed for yourself.

 

그런 다음 너의 어리석은 자아에 대한 이미지들을 치워버리고, 네가 스스로를 위한답시고 정해놓은 것들 대신 하나님께서 너에게 주신 것을 경험하기 위해 노력하는데 남은 연습 시간을 보내도록 하라.

 

 

You are what God created, or what you made. One Self is true; the other is not there. Try to experience the unity of your One Self. Try to appreciate Its holiness and the love from which It was created. Try not to interfere with the Self Which God created as you by hiding Its majesty behind the tiny idols of evil and sinfulness you have made to replace It. Let It come into Its own. Here you are; This is you. And light and joy and peace abide in you because this is so.

 

너는 하나님께서 창조하신 것이거나 네가 만든 것이나 이 둘 중 하나이다. 한 자아One Self는 참되며, 다른 자아는 존재하지 않는다. 너의 한 자아One Self와의 일치를 경험하기 위해 노력하라.그것[=한 자아]의 거룩함과 그것이 창조되어 나온 사랑의 진가를 인식하기 위해 노력하라. 자아를 대체하기 위해 네가 만들어 놓은 악과 허다한 죄의 하찮은 우상들 뒤로 그것의 장엄함을 숨기는 것으로써 하나님께서 너 자신으로서 창조하셨던 자아에 훼방을 놓지 않기 위해 노력하라. 그것이 자신의 소유인 것 안으로 들어오도록 허락하라. 여기에 네가 있다. 이것이 너이다. 그리고 빛과 기쁨과 평화는 네 안에 머무르고 있다. 왜냐하면 사실이 그러하기 때문이다.

 

 

You may not be willing or even able to use the first five minutes of each hour for these exercises. Try, however, to do so when you can.

오늘의 길게 하는 연습을 위해 매 정시마다 5분이라는 시간을 사용하는 것을 너는 썩 내켜하지 않을 수도 있겠고 심지어는 이것이 불가능할 수도 있겠다. 그러나 네가 할 수 있을 때에는 그렇게 하기 위해 노력하라.

 

 

At least remember to repeat these thoughts each hour:

최소한, 한 시간마다 다음의 생각들이라도 반복하겠다고 기억하라.

 

“Light and joy and peace abide in me.

My sinlessness is guaranteed by God.”

“빛과 기쁨과 평화는 내 안에 머물고 있다.

내 죄없음은 하나님에 의해 보증을 받고 있다.”

 

 

Then try to devote at least a minute or so to closing your eyes and realizing that this is a statement of the truth about you.

그런 다음, 최소한 일분 정도라도, 눈을 감고 이것[=위 문장]이 너 자신에 관한 진리에 대한 진술이라는 것을 깨닫는데 전념하기 위해 노력하라.

 

 

If a situation arises that seems to be disturbing, quickly dispel the illusion of fear by repeating these thoughts again. Should you be tempted to become angry with someone, tell him silently:

만약 너의 마음을 어지럽히는 듯 보이는 어떤 상황이 일어나거든, 이 생각들을 다시 반복하는 것으로써 두려움의 환상들을 신속하게 몰아내도록 한다. 누군가에게 화를 내고픈 충동을 느낄 때에는, 그에게 다음과 같이 조용히 말하도록 한다.

 

 

“Light and joy and peace abide in you.

Your sinlessness is guaranteed by God.”

“빛과 기쁨과 평화는 당신 안에 머무르고 있습니다.

당신의 죄없음은 하나님에 의해 보증을 받고 있습니다.”

 

 

You can do much for the world’s salvation today. You can do much today to bring you closer to accepting the part in salvation which God has assigned to you. And you can do much today to bring the conviction to your mind that the idea for the day is true indeed.

 

오늘 하루 동안 너는 세상의 구원을 위해 많은 일을 할 수 있다. 오늘 하루 동안 너는, 하나님께서 너에게 맡기신, 구원 안에서의 역할을 받아들이는 것에 자신을 보다 가까이 데려가기 위해 많은 일을 할 수 있다. 그리고 오늘 하루 동안 너는, 자신의 마음에 오늘의 개념이 진정 참되다는 확신을 가져오기 위해 많은 일을 할 수 있다.
