“By grace I live. By grace I am released.”

“은총에 의해 나는 산다. 은총에 의해 나는 해방된다.”

 

Grace is an aspect of the Love of God which is most like the state prevailing in the Unity of truth. It is the world’s most lofty aspiration, for it leads beyond the world entirely. It is past learning yet the goal of learning, for grace cannot come until the mind prepares itself for true acceptance. Grace becomes inevitable instantly in those who have prepared a table where it can be gently laid and willingly received; an altar clean and holy for the gift.

은총은 하나님의 사랑의 한 측면으로서, 이 측면은 진리의 일치성Unity 속에서 우세한 상태와 가장 많이 닮아 있다. 은총은 세상이 품을 수 있는 가장 고귀한 열망이다. 왜냐하면 은총은 너를 세상을 완전히 넘어서 있는 곳으로 이끌어 주기 때문이다. 은총은 배움을 지나서 있는 것이기는 하나, 실로 모든 배움의 목적은 바로 이것이다. 왜냐하면 마음이 진정한 의미의 받아들임을 위해 스스로를 준비시키기 전까지는 은총이 들어설 수 없기 때문이다. 그러나 은총이 부드럽게 놓여지고 기꺼이 받아들여질 수 있는 식탁을 마련한 자들 속에서라면, 은총은 그 즉시 필연적인 것으로 된다. 그러한 식탁은 과연 선물을 위한 깨끗하고도 거룩한 제단이라 할 수 있다.

 

Grace is acceptance of the Love of God within a world of seeming hate and fear. By grace alone the hate and fear are gone, for grace presents a state so opposite to everything the world contains that those whose minds are lighted by the gift of grace can not believe the world of fear is real.

은총이란, 하나님의 사랑을 미움과 두려움으로 차 있는 듯 보이는 세상 속으로 받아들인다는 것이다. 홀로 은총에 의해서만 미움과 두려움은 사라지게 된다. 왜냐하면 은총은 세상이 포함하고 있는 모든 것들과는 너무나도 다른 어떤 상태를 제시하기 때문이고, 그리하여 은총의 선물에 의해서 비추임을 받은 자들의 마음들은 더 이상 두려움의 세상이 존재한다는 것을 믿을 수 없게 된다.

 

Grace is not learned. The final step must go beyond all learning. Grace is not the goal this course aspires to attain. Yet we prepare for grace in that an open mind can hear the Call to waken. It is not shut tight against God’s Voice. It has become aware that there are things it does not know, and thus is ready to accept a state completely different from experience with which it is familiarly at home.

은총은 배울 수 있는 것이 아니다. 마지막 한 걸음은 모든 배움을 넘어서 있는 것임에 틀림없다. 은총은, 이 강좌가 얻고자 열망하는 목표에서 제외된다. 그럼에도 우리는 은총의 때를 위해 스스로를 준비시키고 있다. 마음은 그 은총의 상태 안에서 깨어나라는 부르심을 들을 수 있게 된다. 은총 안에 있을 때 마음은 하나님의 음성을 거슬러 스스로를 꽉 차단시키지 않게 된다. 이때 마음은 자신이 모르고 있는 것들이 존재한다는 사실을 자각하게 된다. 이로써 마음은 자신에게 매우 친숙한 경험들과는 완전히 다른 어떤 상태를 받아들일 준비가 갖춰진다.

 

 We have perhaps appeared to contradict our statement that the revelation of the Father and the Son as one has been already set. But we have also said the mind determines when that time will be, and has determined it. And yet we urge you to bear witness to the Word of God to hasten the experience of truth, and speed its advent into every mind which recognizes its effects on you.

아마도 우리가 방금 말한 내용은, 아버지와 아들이 하나로서 드러나는 그 때는 이미 정해져 있다고 우리가 요전에 진술한 것과는 모순되는 듯 보일 수도 있다. 또 앞서 우리는, 그 때가 언제가 될지를 정하는 것은 바로 마음이며 마음은 이미 그 때를 정했다고도 말하였다. 그런데도 오늘 우리는 진리가 경험되어지는 그 때를 재촉하기 위하여, 은총이 너에게 미치고 있는 영향들을 인식하고 있는 모든 마음들 속으로 은총이 도래하는 시기를 가속화하기 위하여, 너에게 하나님의 말씀에 대한 증인이 되라고 촉구하고 있다.

 

Oneness is simply the idea God is. And in His Being He encompasses all things. No mind holds anything but Him. We say “God is,” and then we cease to speak, for in that knowledge words are meaningless. There are no lips to speak them, and no part of mind sufficiently distinct to feel that it is now aware of something not itself. It has united with its Source, and like its Source Itself, it merely is.

하나 임이란 그저, 하나님이 계신다는 생각이다. 여기에 다른 생각들은 하나도 필요치 않다. 그분의 현존 안에서 그분은 모든 것들을 에워싸고 계신다. 그분이 아닌 다른 것을 품고 있는 마음은 하나도 없다. 하나님이 계신다고 고백한 후 우리는 곧바로 말하기를 멈추게 된다. 왜냐하면 이 지식 속에서 말은 그 의미를 완전히 상실하기 때문이다. 이제 이 문장을 말하는 입술은 하나도 없다. 그리고 자기 자신이 아닌 무엇을 지금 자신이 알아차리고 있다고 느낄 만큼 충분히 구별되는 마음의 일부도 하나 없다. 마음은 자신의 근원과 일치되었다. 그리고 마음 자신의 근원이 그러한 것처럼 이제 마음도 그저 있을 따름이다.

 

We cannot speak nor write nor even think of this at all. It comes to every mind when total recognition that its will is God’s has been completely given and received completely. It returns the mind into the endless present, where the past and future cannot be conceived. It lies beyond salvation; past all thought of time, forgiveness, and the holy face of Christ. The Son of God has merely disappeared into His Father, as his Father has in him. The world has never been at all. Eternity remains a constant state.

우리는 이 상태에 대해 하나도 말할 수 없고 글을 쓸 수도 없고 심지어는 생각조차도 할 수 없다. 이 상태는, ‘마음 그 자신의 의지는 다름 아닌 하나님의 의지이다’라는 총체적 인식이 완전히 주어지고 완전히 받아들여지고 있는 모든 마음들에 찾아오게 된다. 이 상태는 마음을 끝없는 현재 속으로 반환시킨다. 이 끝없는 현재 속에서 과거와 미래는 결코 떠올릴 수 없게 된다. 이 상태는 구원 너머에 놓여 있다. 시간에 관한 모든 생각들도 용서도 그리스도의 거룩한 얼굴도 지나서 있다. 아들의 아버지가 아들 속으로 사라지신 것처럼,아들도 자기 아버지 속으로 그저 사라졌다. 세상은 애초에 존재한 적도 없는 것으로 되었다. 영원성이 지속적인 상태로 남아 있을 따름이다.

 This is beyond experience we try to hasten. Yet forgiveness, taught and learned, brings with it the experiences which bear witness that the time the mind itself determined to abandon all but this is now at hand. We do not hasten it, in that what you will offer was concealed from Him Who teaches what forgiveness means. All learning was already in His Mind, accomplished and complete. He recognized all that time holds and gave it to all minds that each one might determine, from a point where time has ended, when it is released to revelation and eternity.

이것은 우리가 그 시기를 앞당기고자 노력하는 경험을 넘어서 있는 것이다. 그럼에도 불구하고 용서가 가르쳐지고 배워질 때 용서는, 오로지 이것만을 위해 다른 모든 것들을 기꺼이 포기하기로 결정한 마음이라면 마음이 정해놓은 그 때가 이제 곧 찾아오리라는 사실을 입증해주는 경험들을, 자신[=용서]과 더불어 가져오게 된다. 그런데 또 장차 네가 제공하게 될 것들이 용서가 진정 뜻하는 바를 가르치고 있는 그이[=성령] 안에 감춰져 있었다는 점에서 보자면, 사실 우리는 그 시기를 서두르고 있는 것도 아니다. 모든 배움은 이미 그의 마음속에 완성되고 완전한 상태로 자리 잡고 있었다.그는 시간이 간직하고 있는 모든 것들을 이미 인식하고 있었고, 시간을 모든 마음들에 주어서 각각의 마음들이 시간이 종결된 그 시점으로부터 마음 그 자신이, 계시revelation과 영원성으로 풀려나게 될 그 때를 결정할 수 있게 하였다.

 

We have repeated several times before that you but make a journey that is done. For oneness must be here. Whatever time the mind has set for revelation is entirely irrelevant to what must be a constant state, forever as it always was; forever to remain as it is now. We merely take the part assigned long since, and fully recognize as perfectly fulfilled by Him Who wrote salvation’s script in His Creator’s Name, and in the Name of His Creator’s Son.

앞서 우리는, 이미 다 끝나버린 여행을 네가 하고 있을 따름이라고 여러 차례 반복해서 말해왔다. 하나임Oneness이 바로 여기에 있음에 틀림없기 때문이다. 계시의 시기를 마음이 언제로 정해놓았냐 하는 것은, 지속적인 상태로 남아있을 수밖에 없는 그것[=하나임]과는 전적으로 무관하다. 그것은 과거에 늘 그래왔던 것처럼 영원토록 그렇게 지속되어 왔고, 지금 그러한 것처럼 앞으로도 영원히 그렇게 남아있을 것이다. 우리는 그저 아주 오래 전부터 우리 자신에게 맡겨진 역할에 참여하면서, 그가 자신의 창조주의 이름과자신의 창조주의 아들의 이름으로 그가 작성한 구원의 각본대로 완벽하게 이뤄나가시는 그 모습을 완전히 인식할 따름이다.

 There is no need to further clarify what no-one in the world can understand. When revelation of your oneness comes, it will be known and fully understood. Now we have work to do, for those in time can speak of things beyond, and listen to words which explain what is to come is past already. Yet what meaning can the words convey to those who count the hours still, and rise and work and go to sleep by them?

세상에 있는 그 누구도 이해할 수 없는 그것을 보다 명료하게 설명할 필요가 전혀 없다. 너의 하나임Oneness에 대한 계시가 찾아오게 되면, 그것[=하나임]은 절로 너에게 알려지고 완전히 이해되기 마련이다. 이제 우리에게는 해야 할 일이 있다. 시간 안에 사로잡힌 자들은 저 너머에 있는 것들에 대해서 말을 할 수도 있고, 장차 오게 될 것이 이미 와 있다는 것을 설명해주는 말들을 들을 수도 있다. 그러나 여전히 시간을 헤아리고 있으며 시간에 따라서 기상하고 일하고 자는 자들에게, 이 말들이 과연 무슨 의미를 전해줄 수 있겠는가?

 

Suffice it, then, that you have work to do to play your part. The ending must remain obscure to you until your part is done. It does not matter. For your part is still what all the rest1)depends on. As you take the role assigned to you, salvation comes a little nearer each uncertain heart that does not beat as yet in tune with God. Forgiveness is the central theme which runs throughout salvation, holding all its2) parts in meaningful relationships, the course it runs directed, and its outcome sure3).

그렇다면 너의 역할을 수행하기 위해 너에게 할 일이 주어졌다는 것으로 충분하다. 너의 역할이 다 이루어지기 전까지는 그 결말이 너에게 모호한 상태로 남아있을 것이다. 그러나 이는 중요치 않다. 지금도 너의 역할에 다른 모든 역할들이 의지하고 있기 때문이다. 너에게 맡겨진 역할을 네가 자신의 역할로 받아들임에 따라, 아직 하나님과 조화를 이루며 뛰고 있지 않은 각각의 불확실한 심장들에게 구원이 더욱 가까이 다가서게 된다. 용서는 구원 전반에 걸쳐서 흐르고 있는 핵심 주제이며, 구원의 모든 역할들을 의미 있는 관계들 안에서 간직하고 있고, 구원이 흘러가고 있는 그 경로를 안내하고 있으며, 구원의 결과는 확실하다.

 

And now we ask for grace, the final gift salvation can bestow. Experience that grace provides will end in time, for grace foreshadows Heaven, yet does not replace the thought of time but for a little while. The interval suffices. It is here that miracles are laid; to be returned by you from holy instants you receive, through grace, in your experience, to all who see the light that lingers on your face.

이제 우리는, 구원이 줄 수 있는 마지막 선물인 은총을 청한다. 그러나 은총이 제공하는 경험도 시간이 지나면 끝이 날 것이다. 왜냐하면 은총은 천국에 앞서 오는 전조이기 때문이다. 은총은 시간의 생각을 아주 잠시만 대체할 것이다. 그러나 그 정도의 간격이라면 충분하다. 바로 여기에 기적들이 놓이기 될 것이기 때문이다. 그러면 기적들은, 너에 의해서, 너의 경험 속에서 은총을 통해 네가 받은 거룩한 순간들로부터, 너의 얼굴에서 머무르고 있는 그 빛을 보는 모든 자들에게로 반환되어질 것이다.

 

What is the Face of Christ but his who went a moment into timelessness, and brought a clear reflection of the unity he felt an instant back to bless the world? How could you finally attain to it forever, while a part of you remains outside, unknowing, unawakened, and in need of you as witness to the truth?

순간에서 영원으로 건너갔으며, 세상을 축복하고자 자신이 순간 느꼈던 합일unity에 대한 분명한 반영을 세상에 가져온 자의 얼굴이 아니라면 과연 그 무엇이 그리스도의 얼굴이겠는가? 아직 너의 일부가 바깥에 남겨져 있고 무지한 상태와 깨어나지 못한 상태로 남아 있고 너를 진리에 대한 증인으로 필요로 하는데, 어찌 네가 구원을 최종적으로 획득하여 이곳을 영원토록 떠나 있을 수 있겠는가?

 

Be grateful to return, as you were glad to go an instant and accept the gifts that grace provided you. You carry them back to yourself. And revelation stands not far behind. Its coming is ensured. We ask for grace and for experience that comes from grace. We welcome the release it offers everyone. We do not ask for the unaskable. We do not look beyond what grace can give. For this we can give in the grace that has been given us.

돌아오게 된 것에 감사하라. 너는 기꺼이 한걸음에 달려 나가 은총이 너에게 제공한 선물들을 받아왔기 때문이다. 지금 너는 그 선물들을 세상에 가져오고 있다. 이제 구원도 저 먼 곳에 있지 않다. 구원의 도래는 너무나도 확실하다. 우리는 은총과 은총에서 비롯되는 경험을 청한다. 우리는 은총이 모든 이에게 제공하는 해방을 환영한다. 우리는 청할 수 없는 것을 청하고 있는 것이 아니다. 우리는 은총이 제공할 수 있는 것 너머를 바라보고 있지 않다. 우리는, 우리에게 주어진 은총 속에서 실로 이것[=은총이 제공할 수 있는 것]만을 줄 수 있기 때문이다.

 

Our learning goal today does not exceed this prayer, yet in the world what could be more than what we ask this day of Him Who gives the grace we ask, as it was given Him?

오늘 우리가 배우고 있는 목표는 다음의 기도를 넘어서 있지 않다. 그런데 과연 이 세상에, 이 날에 우리가 당신께서 은총을 받았던 방식 그대로 우리가 청하는 은총을 주고 계시는 그분께 청하고 있는 것보다 더 나은[=많은] 것이 있을 수 있겠는가?

By grace I will release.”

“은총에 의해 나는 준다.

은총에 의해 나는 해방시킨다.”
