Narayan’s Teachings
‘Treat every being as God’ was his central teaching. Chanting of the Lord’s name was so dear to his heart that his essential advice to his devotees was ‘Chant God’s name and experience the bliss.’ He was not used to giving long sermons or spiritual explanations, but the words he spoke had an unearthly flavor that appealed deeply to the hearts of his devotees. He advised people to lead a spiritual life, an honest life based on what little understanding they had, and ‘the necessary guidance will definitely follow,’ he assured.
Sometimes Maharaj gave simple talks on meditation, morality, and spiritual life. More often, though, he sang to his devotees. ‘O Lord of Love,‘ he would sing, ‘Oh, do come and stay in my heart, stay in my heart!’
He would tell devotees, ‘Why go to the jungle to meditate? This very image that is before you is the heart. My form is the heart. Accept me as truth. Accept this body as truth because this body itself has become God.’
Sri Narayan Maharaj taught his devotees, ‘The divine name is God himself. You cannot separate the name from God. God is the name, and the name is God. By repeating the holy name, you repeat God himself. You might not know that, but God knows. And finally, when devotion is complete, the Name has become everything for you. I am the name that you have taken. I am He.’
Miracles
The voice of Smt. Anjanabai, who was a singer of reputed fame, was miraculously restored. A ship and its owner were rescued from the cyclone storms with his divine intervention. A famous doctor was pulled back from jaws of death by a mere glance from him. Limited food was prepared for a few, but when covered by Maharaj with a cloth, it was more than sufficient to feed thousands of people, and still, there remained more in the utensils.
Drunkards were inspired to leave alcohol forever by a mere glance. He saved a devotee and his car from falling into a river by physically appearing in front of the vehicle. He cured many incurable diseases and helped thousands of families by giving food, clothes, medicines, and education.

‘모든 존재를 신으로 대하라’는 것이 그의 중심 가르침이었습니다. 주님의 이름을 외우는 것은 그의 가슴에 매우 소중했기 때문에, 신자들에게 주는 가장 중요한 조언은 ‘신의 이름을 외우고 지복을 체험하라’는 것이었습니다. 그는 긴 설교나 영적 설명을 하는 데 익숙하지 않았지만, 그가 한 말들은 이 세상의 것이 아닌 듯한 향기를 지니고 있어 신자들의 가슴에 깊이 울려 퍼졌습니다. 그는 사람들이 가진 작은 이해를 바탕으로 영적 삶, 정직한 삶을 살라고 조언하며, ‘필요한 인도는 반드시 따르게 될 것’이라고 확신시켰습니다.
때로는 마하라지가 명상, 도덕, 영적 삶에 대한 간단히 이야기했습니다. 하지만 더 자주 그는 신자들에게 노래를 불렀습니다. ‘오 사랑의 주님, 제 가슴속에 머무르소서, 제 가슴속에 머무르소서!’
그는 신자들에게 말하곤 했습니다. ‘왜 명상하러 숲으로 가야 합니까? 여러분 앞에 있는 이 이미지가 바로 심장입니다. 나의 형상이 곧 심장입니다. 나를 진리로 받아들이세요. 이 몸 자체가 신이 되었으니 이 몸을 진리로 받아들이세요.’
스리 나라얀 마하라지는 신도들에게 가르쳤습니다. ‘신성한 이름은 신 자신입니다. 이름과 신을 분리할 수 없습니다. 신은 이름이며, 이름은 신입니다. 성스러운 이름을 반복하는 것은 신 자신을 반복하는 것입니다. 당신은 모를지라도 신은 알고 있습니다. 그리고 마침내 신심이 완전해지면, 그 이름은 당신에게 모든 것이 됩니다. 내가 바로 당신이 취한 이름입니다. 내가 바로 그분입니다.’
기적奇跡
명망 높은 가수였던 스미트 안자나바이의 목소리가 기적적으로 회복되었습니다. 그의 신성한 개입으로 인해 한 척의 배와 그 소유주가 사이클론 폭풍에서 구출되었습니다. 한 유명한 의사는 그의 단 한 번의 시선만으로 죽음의 문턱에서 되돌아왔습니다. 소수의 사람들을 위해 준비된 한정된 음식이 마하라지가 천으로 덮자 수천 명을 먹일 만큼 충분해졌고, 그릇에는 여전히 더 많은 음식이 남아 있었습니다.
술꾼들은 그의 한 번의 시선만으로 술을 영원히 끊을 결심을 하게 되었습니다. 한 신자와 그의 차가 강에 빠질 뻔했을 때, 마하라지는 차량 앞에 실제로 나타나 그들을 구했습니다. 그는 많은 불치병을 치료하고 음식, 옷, 약, 교육을 제공하여 수천 가정을 도왔습니다.
